SOHO

      What is SOHO?
Small businesses use SOHO for what purposes?

SOHO is a privately owned and operated businesses who are self-employed.

More and more people are leaving the traditional work environment in favor of self-employment and entrepreneurial endeavors. To find success, small business owners need access to the Internet for their company’s computer network.
Small businesses don’t need large networks to support themselves online. They are referred to as Small Offices/Home Offices. They can set up small office networks that cater to their online needs. These networks are called SOHO networks.

Some small businesses seek to cut costs even further and keep office space within the owner’s home. SOHO routers are also useful for these users, who can use them to set up home office networks for business and personal use.
SOHO networks are just LANs (local area networks) that support very small businesses. SOHO businesses are considered any business that is made up of 1 to 10 people.

A SOHO network can be a mixed network of wired and wireless computers. They also include printers, voice over IP (VoIP) ,and fax over IP technology.

A SOHO router is a model of broadband router built and marketed. These are often the same routers used for standard home networking.

The SOHO network solves many of the problems of owning multiple PCs. It shared information between users. It is an affordable way to get many computers onto one Internet connection.

Switches and hubs aren’t as useful because they aren’t smart enough to look at the IP addresses of our internal computers. Routers will provide this functionality to set up the network. The routers that are used for small environments are considered all-in-one devices because they include many features, such as dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP), network address translation (NAT) and a firewall.

There are two popular SOHO routers---- Cisco SOHO 90 Series and D-Link DIR-640L Wireless N300 SOHO VPN Router.

Cisco SOHO 90 Series is ideal for very small businesses of about 1 to 5 employees.

Small office networks and home office networks will be equipped with the necessary security features to keep themselves and their business protected online.

The Cisco SOHO 90 Series router features are Firewall protection, Encryption for VPN, easy setup, management capabilities, and low operational costs.

D-Link DIR-640L Wireless N300 SOHO VPN Router is easy to set up and it offers great security features. SOHOs will be able to configure the computer network they need within their small/home offices. Like the Cisco SOHO router, this is a great device for small businesses. With the Wireless N300 SHO VPN router, users can expect configurable interface, dual Active Firewall protection, WPATM or WPA2TM encryption, and VPN server.

Install and configure a small office (SOHO) network
        1. Broadband
        a. Broadband Cable—used for cable internet and cable TV
        1. Offer higher speeds
        2. Get an average of 5mbps to 7 mbps
        3. More users on internet, slower it become for everyone
        b. Satellite---uses a parabolic antenna(satellite dish) to connect through line of sight to a satellite
        1. Used in places in which standard landline internet access is not available
        2. In geosynchronous orbit, t 22,000 miles above the earth
        3. Dish connects to coax cable that runs to a switching/channeling device for your computers
        4. Problems with satellite
        a. Electrical and natural interference
        b. Latency
        c. Due to the distance of 44,000 miles of the data transfer, there can be a delay of .5 seconds to 5 seconds.
        c. ISDN---Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN)is a digital technology developed to combat the limitations of PSTN.
Users can send data, talk on the phone, fax, all from one line. It is broken down into two types of services: BRI:Basic Rate ISDN:128Kbps.

Two equal B channels at 64Kbps each for data and one 16Kbps D channel for timing.

        PRI:Primary Rate ISDN:1.536Mbps, runs on a T-1 circuit; 23 equal 64Kbps B channels for data and one 64Kbps D channel for timing.

Many companies still use ISDN for video conferencing or as a fault-tolerant secondary Internet access connection. Data commuters use this if DSL or cable is not available.
